Description
The photos are wonderful as well as the art images. The quality of the pictures are amazing, especially the full page images of the authors. I’m not sure the photo I took does them justice.
The book is organized in chapters based on the era. Pre 19th century, early 19th century, late 19th century, early 20th century, mid 20th century and finally ‘writing today’. Also included is a bonus directory after each chapter of other prolific writers, with an overview of them and their key works.
Each featured author includes factual information about the writer’s life, writings as well as death (for those that have passed). There are interesting titbits about their writings, key moments in their lives and their inspiration as well as the impact they made.
And it truly is remarkable how these writers had such an impact by what they wrote, and how they changed history. The foreword written by James Naughtie said it best: “they (quality writers) do what we can’t, which is why we need them, and most of the time we feel no envy.” Very true and after reading about many of these authors, I realize how difficult their lives were, and the power but complexities that comes with the territory.
I am thoroughly enjoying this book. It’s easy to read and one that I like to pick up for a quick, relaxing reading break during my busy day.
This is a perfect gift for fans of literature.
